Living in a healthy and clean environment

Led by the Student Representative Council (SRC), the International University of Management (IUM) cleanup campaign commenced at Mautamenene Fire Station.

Over 150 students from the IUM Coastal campus took part in this year’s cleaning campaign. Participants moved with Nathnael Maxuilili Avenue until the traffic lights at Desert Store in Kuisebmond while some also branched out to Khomas Hochland Street, where more cleaning was done.

As a corporate citizen, IUM has a social responsibility towards Walvis Bay, and since 2016 the coastal campus has made it a custom of having a cleaning campaign annually on the Friday before the independence celebrations. However due to Covid-19 regulations, the cleaning campaign could not happen in 2020 and 2021.

Eliud Mwaamenange, a member of the institution’s Student Representative Council highlighted that IUM does not only produce graduates but it also serves the community through initiatives such as the cleaning campaign. “We are making a difference in the community because on top of cleaning the environment, we also spoke to a lot of street vendors as well as other people that we met along the way and shared with them the reasons why it is important to keep a clean environment. With that we are contributing to the provison of information which we hope will in turn lead to behavioural change.”

Mwaamenange said that a lot still needs to be done in regard to spreading awareness in the community on the importance of maintaining a clean environment. “More needs to be done to educate people on the importance of living in a healthy and clean environment. Many still don’t understand why it is important to keep our environment clean. A lot of times you will find that street vendors are operating in areas where there is litter laying around, and because of a lack of knowledge, no effort is put forward to try and clean those areas.”
