LAC PROJECT EMPOWERS SAN

NEWS IN SHORT

As part of the Legal Assistance Programme (LAC) to empower marginalised communities, a recent outreach focused on the Hai//om San, whose ancestral land lies in Etosha National Park. The visit assessed the impact of resettlement on their land and cultural rights while gathering socio-economic data to guide future support.

A key effort is strengthening San paralegals trained under the EU-funded San-Empowerment Project by providing hands-on experience in addressing community challenges. The team are also evaluating progress at proposed resettlement farms, working towards solutions for land and cultural rights concerns.

"The anticipated outcomes include raising awareness about the land rights struggles faced by the Hai//om San community, while simultaneously empowering the San paralegals with the tools and experience necessary to become strong advocates for their people," LAC said in a statement last week. The results of the initiative are to be compiled into a comprehensive report, offering both findings and actionable recommendations for future interventions. Throughout the process, the team aims to strengthen relationships with key stakeholders such as the Hai//om Association, the Hai//om Traditional Authority and government entities, fostering collaboration and support for the community’s rights and well-being.
