Kanyanga secures fifth term as Rundu mayor

The mayor of Rundu Gabriel Kanyanga has pledged to prioritize infrastructure development that meets the needs of the river town’s growing population while preserving the natural beauty that makes Rundu unique.

Kanyanga made these remarks during his acceptance speech after he was re-elected as the mayor of Rundu on Monday, marking his fifth term in office.

Johanna Kakondo also retained her position as deputy mayor. Engelbert Muyenga, Regina Nekare, and Reginald Ndara were also confirmed as members of the management committee, with Muyenga continuing as the chairperson.

Kanyanga, who first assumed the mayoral office in 2020, expressed his gratitude and outlined his vision for the town’s development.

“Rundu will certainly be recognized as a city of diverse opportunities and a centre of socio-economic excellence. As we embark on this new chapter together, I want to share the vision for Rundu Town with all of you. Our town is rich in culture, diversity and natural resources. It is our duty to harness these strengths to create an environment with vast and substantial opportunities where every citizen can thrive,” he said.

“We will prioritize infrastructure development that meets the needs of our growing population while preserving the natural beauty that makes Rundu unique. Job creation will be at the forefront of our agenda we must invest in our youth to ensure they have opportunities that empower them for the future, The National dream is for Namibia to become an industrialized nation by the year 2030, developed by her Human Resource in the midst of peace and stability, hence, we need to commit and recommit ourselves to build industries that shall create employment and transform the socio-economic status of our people,” he added.

Kakondo extended a word of gratitude to her fellow councillors for taking time from their comfort zone to participate in the democratic process fully.

“Thank you for exercising your right and responsibility as leaders of our society Your engagement is vital for a thriving democracy, and it reflects your commitment to shaping the future of Rundu. What you have just demonstrated today contributes to a stronger voice for our community,” she said

“Congratulations to all of us and I trust that we will continue to carry out our duties with integrity, transparency, and dedication as usual. The responsibilities ahead are significant, but I believe in your ability to lead Rundu towards progress and development. As we move forward from this election, let us remember that our strength lies in unity. I urge all newly elected officebearers to work together towards common goals. Collaboration will be key in addressing challenges and seizing opportunities that lie ahead,” she added.
