Kantema-Gaomas calls out NYC

Jemimah Ndebele
Deputy youth minister Emma Kantema-Gaomas has criticised the National Youth Council (NYC) for the way it runs its affairs.

“As a ministry providing the oversight function, we are not pleased with the affairs of the NYC,” she said last week at the 16th national youth day celebrations in Rietfontein.

“With what we have experienced these past two days, I want to urge the NYC to roll up their sleeves. You elected them, you must hold them accountable,” she told the youthful audience.

Kantema-Gaomas further used the platform to urge the council to use the monetary and other support presented to it by her ministry.

“You have a budget, you have support organisations and you have us a ministry to guide you,” she said.

She explained that the N$25 million allocated to the NYC is to be used to implement programmes in the areas of health, environment, gender, sport and enterprises that target all 14 regions of the country.

They shine, we shine

After an energetic performance by local musician Yeezir, Kantema-Gaomas urged youth leaders to support young people who are trying to do something meaningful.

“We have talented young people like Yeezir and Christine Mboma using their talents. How are we supporting them? We need to support them so they can uplift us, because when they shine, we all shine.“

She also used the platform to announce that a task force has been established to alleviate the youth unemployment crisis in the country.

“The percentage of youth unemployment is something that keeps us awake at night. We know the challenges come at both national and international level,” she said.
