JUST IN: ​​​​​​​Namibia's press freedom takes a hit

Namibia has lost the top spot in Africa on the Reporters Without Borders press freedom index.

Mauritania, with a score of 74.2 to Namibia's 74.16, is now ranked the highest on the continent.

Namibia showed deterioration in each of the five indicators used to determine press freedom. Specifically, with regard to the social indicator, Namibia dropped a worrying 35 places on the ranking.

Overall, Namibia dropped 12 places on the global ranking compared to 2023.

The top 10 countries on the index are Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Netherlands, Finland, Estonia, Portugal, Ireland, Switzerland and Germany. Meanwhile, the three countries that rank the worst are Eritrea, Syria and Afghanistan.
