Katrina Hanse-Himarwa was laid to rest in painstakingly organised fashion at her hometown Mariental on Saturday, where President Nangolo Mbumba hailed her as a woman of substance.

The former education minister succumbed to cancer at the age of 57 earlier this month.

A former Hardap governor and Swapo central committee member, she was celebrated by many of her loved ones as a woman who lived an extraordinary life, who was dedicated to whatever cause she committed to and, most importantly, was a devoted mother.

During the memorial service, Reverend Abraham ?Kheibeb said Hanse-Himarwa was castigated for “standing up for the truth”.

"As long as you do something good or agree with people, then you are a good person. But the moment you say no, you are reprimanded. She tried to lift up the nation, and put her life at risk for this country, for us. But thank God that Katrina never gave up, she did what she had to do - even though she was castigated by the world.”

Woman of substance

Mbumba, who remembered the late minister as a younger sister and friend, said even though the sparkle of her eyes is no more, she left them with endless memories.

"She was a woman of substance. She was a woman of conviction. She was a woman of honour. A woman of faith. A woman of humour, warmth and compassion. She lived a life that was not just well-lived, but magnificently lived. She lived a life that was dedicated to others, a life devoted to making Namibia a better place. She was a champion of justice, equity and unity. Indeed, she was a model patriot and a committed cadre," he said.
