Fatal accidents pile up at start of festive season

A fatal accident in which two persons died, involved a vehicle that was transporting 27 people.

A 23-year-old man died in an accident on Monday on the road between Kalkveld and Omaruru. According to the police, a driver and five passengers were travelling in a Toyota bakkie through Otjiwarongo to Omaruru after attending a wedding in the Omaheke Region. The 57-year-old driver allegedly lost control over the vehicle, which overturned, causing serious injuries to the five passengers, who were family members, including the driver.

One of the passengers succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The name of the deceased persons has not yet been made public. Overloaded vehicle crashes In another incident, two people died in an accident on Thursday in which a car overloaded with 27 occupants overturned on the Nkurenkuru-Rundu main road in the Kavango West Region.

According to the police, the 21-year-old driver lost control over the white Toyota Hilux, and the vehicle overturned. A 16-year-old girl, Magreth Kangumbe, and Markus Kangumbe, age unknown, died. Several other passengers, including the driver, sustained mild to serious injuries and were transported to the Nanduka District Hospital for medical care.

In a separate incident, a woman died in an accident when her car collided with an Avbob truck between the Aris Weigh Bridge and the Omeya Golf Estate. The truck, driven by a 59-year-old South African, was travelling south along the B1 road when it collided with a Ford Kiga and its driver, Loraine Brink, died at the scene.

The cause of the accident is yet to be determined.

More fatalities in another incident, two people died in a car crash on Sunday when a truck overturned approximately 25 kilometres from Swakopmund. According to the police, it is alleged that the deceased driver was driving a Scania Truck transporting charcoal from Arandis to Swakopmund and lost control and the truck overturned and landed on its roof. On Saturday, two people died in an accident on the Ompumbu-Okatana road in Oshana Region when the driver lost control of the vehicle.

They have been identified as 25-year-old Henock Fredrick and 31-year-old Werner Dhigwanitheni Endjala. According to the police, the 35-year-old driver of a Toyota Coralla was driving from Okatana to Ompubu when he lost control of the vehicle and went off the road, and the vehicle rolled over.

Two other passengers sustained serious injuries.
