Benitha Imbamba, the chairperson of the Erongo Regional Council, last week voiced concerns regarding the erosion of ethical conduct amongst councillors. During a council meeting on Thursday, 4 April, she also took aim at the councillors’ lack of confidentiality.

Imbamba expressed dismay over the apparent disregard for confidentiality within council proceedings, adding that proceedings held within council chambers were finding their way into the public domain through various channels.

“While it is true that the proceedings of ordinary regional council meetings are within the public domain, it is imperative that we exercise discretion in disseminating sensitive information,” she said. “Certain matters require careful consideration and clarification before being shared outside these walls.”

Meanwhile, highlighting the long-standing challenges facing the council in terms of strategic planning, Imbabma said there is a need for a comprehensive review of existing plans. She urged councillors to contribute actively to the formulation of the council’s annual plan.

She further reminded councillors of a February directive to develop detailed year plans - complete with financial implications - to be coordinated by the control administrative officers in their respective constituency offices, and wanted to know whether this directive had been effectively executed.

Imbamba underscored the importance of an upcoming retreat for administrators tasked with reviewing the annual plan, and stressed the importance of meticulous planning to mitigate ad hoc activities and ensure alignment with the broader objectives of the council.
