Empowering San paralegals
NEWS IN SHORT
The Legal Assistance Centre (LAC) recently conducted an outreach and paralegal exposure visit to the Hai//om San community, whose ancestral land lies in the Etosha National Park.
The February visit formed part of the LAC’s programme to empower marginalised communities in Namibia.
The LAC said that the initiative is aimed at assessing the impact of resettlement on the Hai//om community, particularly in relation to their cultural and land rights. “By gathering socioeconomic and cultural data, the initiative seeks to guide future support for the community while fostering a sense of inclusion and equality through active engagement.” A key part of the effort is to strengthen the capacity of San paralegals, who have already undergone training under the EU-funded San empowerment project, by providing them with practical experience in addressing the challenges faced by their community. - Ellanie Smit
