Amushelelo sues police for ‘fractured’ arm

Elizabeth Joseph
Lawyers representing Namibia Economic Freedom Fighters (NEFF) economic commissar Michael Amushelelo yesterday wrote to the Namibian Police, demanding N$750 000 for allegedly fracturing his humerus bone when they arrested him on Wednesday.

The humerus is also known as the upper-arm bone, which runs from the shoulder to the elbow.

Amushelelo stood in solidarity with Craft Bistro employees after they claimed to have been treated unlawfully by owners Urs Gamma ad Petra Illing.

Illing, a German national, is currently being investigated for possibly overstaying her welcome in Namibia amid allegations that her visa expired three years ago.

"It is our instruction that the members of the Namibian Police relied on violent conduct and dispensed the same against our client when the unlawful arrest was carried out.

“Our client was aggressively wrestled and painfully assaulted by members of the Namibian Police," Kadhila Amoomo wrote in a letter to Inspector General Joseph Shikongo.

‘We have footage’

Amoomo claimed that his client was assaulted by the police without having resisted arrest.

"We have video footage where the police officers can be seen assaulting our client despite the absence of any resistance from him," Amushelelo's lawyer maintained.

The former forex trader is seeking N$500 000 for “pain and suffering endured at the hands” of the police, and a further N$250 000 for unlawful arrest and detention.

Meanwhile, Amushelelo told Namibian Sun: "I got to the police station around 12:45 or so and immediately I started asking for medical attention, which I was denied.

“My lawyer had to intervene for me to receive medical attention - this only happened around 15:00, and I was taken to Katutura Hospital."

“After the statement I was basically released, so the whole purpose of the arrest was just merely to try and strike fear so that I stop with my activism, which they have just fuelled,” he said.
