Accidents claim three lives in Kavango regions

Three people died in motor accidents in the Kavango East and Kavango West regions over the weekend.According to the Namibian Police, two people died while four sustained injuries in a car accident on Friday on the Trans Caprivi Highway in the Rundu district. Spokesperson Deputy Commissioner Kauna Shikwambi confirmed the incident, which took place around 18:30 at Mupapama village.

Shikwambi said it is alleged that the 28-year-old driver of a dark blue Toyota seven-seater was travelling from west to east when he lost control of the vehicle. “It was further alleged that one of the passengers grabbed the steering wheel, causing the driver to lose control of the vehicle. This resulted in the vehicle going off-road and bumping into trees before it came to a standstill, killing two passengers and injuring four others slightly,” she said.

She added that the deceased persons’ bodies were taken to Rundu hospital mortuary. “Only one deceased person was identified. The next of kin is not yet informed.”

All the injured were taken to the hospital in Rundu for medical attention, and are in stable condition.

Unlicenced driver kills pedestrian

In a separate incident, a 33-year-old unlicenced driver was arrested on Saturday after allegedly hitting and killing a pedestrian in the Kakoro village area in the Kavango West Region.

Shikwambi said the incident took place around 21:00 on the Rundu to Nkurenkuru (B10 road). The deceased was identified as Ndjati Pius Kamina. His next of kin have been informed.

“It was alleged that the unlicenced male driver of a silver Mazda Demio was driving from Sitopogo village to Rundu when he bumped Kamina, who was crossing the road. He died on the way to the hospital. The driver and passenger escaped unharmed and the driver was arrested.”
