Urban and rural development minister Erastus Uutoni on Wednesday congratulated president-elect Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and urged the nation to celebrate her win irrespective of their political affiliation.

Uutoni said Namibians have spoken, and their voices should be heard and respected.

He was speaking at the unveiling of 26 new street names in Ongwediva.

Uutoni used the opportunity to hail Nandi-Ndaitwah’s achievement after she was announced the winner of the presidential race in the just-ended elections.

He also congratulated those elected to the National Assembly.

Uutoni is one of the ministers who did not make the cut to occupy one of the 51 parliamentary seats secured by Swapo.

“The process is always tough. Accept defeat. Getting angry will not help anyone," he said.

He added: "Let us celebrate the winners, irrespective of which political party you belong to. We all want what is best for Namibia as a country. We are one nation and should work together for the purpose of development and putting political differences aside."

Service delivery

Uutoni applauded the Ongwediva Town Council for its street-naming initiative. Nandi-Ndaitwah's late brother Denys Nandi is among those honoured.

He said honouring members of society by naming streets in their name is a meaningful and enduring way to commemorate their life and achievements.

“Street names help us figure out where we are, talk about where we’ve been and ascertain whether we are headed in the right direction. They are a symbol of the people, places, events or things that not only place us geographically, but also politically, socially and historically,” the minister said.

He added that the naming or renaming of streets and places is also an important element of service delivery, as it promotes legibility and facilitates the effective delivery of services such as water and electricity, emergency services and policing functions.

Nandi’s elder sister, Canner Kalimba (80), thanked the Ongwediva councillors for honouring the brave men and women who contributed to the development of the town and the country at large.

Kalimba said all the heroes and iconic leaders who were honoured, including her late brother, were recognised as they were people who had integrity and worked hard for the betterment of Namibia.

“Some of those recognised went through the hardships of war to ensure that Namibia can be liberated,” she said.
