15th national youth week launched
Encouraging entrepreneurship in agriculture
This year's event will be attended by 10 youth representatives from each constituency in Namibia, as well as 28 youths from marginalised communities, 14 youths with disabilities, the NYC's 10 board of directors and representatives from the sponsors.
Established in March 1994, the National Youth Council of Namibia (NYC) hosts a national youth week in a different town every year. This year’s youth week, held under the theme ‘Promoting Youth Agripreneurship: An Avenue for Self-Employment and Work-Readiness’, is aimed at encouraging young people to take part in Namibian food systems through small- to medium-sized enterprises in the agriculture sector.
“We aim to demonstrate the benefits of agricultural products and collaborate with the relevant stakeholders in order to create awareness about different approaches and opportunities in the agriculture sector,” Calista Schwartz-Gowases, NYC director said.
Taking place in Lüderitz from 26 to 29 April, this year’s event – the 15th annual youth week – will be attended by 10 youth representatives from each constituency in Namibia, as well as 28 youths from marginalised communities, 14 youths with disabilities, the NYC’s 10 board of directors and representatives from the sponsors.
The sponsors include the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust, Agribank, Seaflower, Namport, the Development Bank of Namibia, the United Nations Population Fund and the United Nations Development Programme.
In addition, the event will be attended by stakeholders in agriculture, fisheries and related sectors, including financial institutions and international development agencies.
Throughout the week, activities such as educational presentations, value chain exhibitions, excursions and a clean-up campaign will take place, while attendees will also be encouraged to get vaccinated against Covid-19.
This initiative is a great way to open doors for the youth - not forgetting disabled and marginalised groups within the youth - to give everyone a fair chance at learning and growing, the NYC said.
