Radio-controlled cars becoming entertaining sport

Car racing has been around for more than 100 years, and has become a well-loved sport around the globe.Radio-controlled cars are also becoming more popular by the day. Think of it as car racing, but without the driver being inside the vehicle.A radio-controlled car is a scaled vehicle with a transmitter and a receiver inside it, so that you can control the car.Radio-controlled cars come in various types, which include: The Nitro Truggy class, the Nitro Buggy class and the Truggy electric class.Loffie van der Merwe, the co-founder of the Windhoek Radio Control Club (WRCC), explained the differences between the classes. “The Nitro Buggy is the most difficult one to drive because it is quite small. The Nitro Truggy requires a lot of maintenance, but it’s easier to drive.”He added: “My favourite is the electric class – it’s less maintenance, the power delivery can be adjusted via laptop, you can basically adjust the car to your liking and it’s plug and play”.WRCC is trying to get back to its best by making the international sport more popular in Namibia.Its other founder, Colin Bravenboer, said: “Before the pandemic, we had good competitions going on where guys from South Africa came to compete here in Namibia. We are looking to get back to that and have more competitions”.In Windhoek, many people really enjoy taking their cars out on the track.Youngster Colin de Beer (14), who is member of WRCC, said: “I like the sport because it gives me a connection with my dad and I love doing it because I am into mechanics. I want to be a mechanical engineer when I grow up, so this is really a good start for me”.When asked why people should join the club, Van der Merwe said: “If you want to start with something that you can use for a long time, I encourage you to join WRCC”.“We have the open class that we recently started for people who have cars but don’t race. In a few months, we will be looking to build a track for those who want to take their cars out for a spin.”
