Man beats elderly woman to death
News in short
A man has been arrested for allegedly beating an elderly woman to death at Enkombo village in the Omusati Region’s Etayi constituency on Friday.
The suspect is reportedly 36 and is allegedly the 104-year-old victim’s son, but police have yet to verify their ages or relation.
It is alleged that the suspect – who is purportedly mentally ill - beat the woman on her head with a stick used for firewood. She sustained serious injuries.
Omusati police crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Simaho, confirmed the incident, adding that the woman was transported to the Oshikuku Hospital for treatment, where her condition deteriorated. She was then transported to the Oshakati State Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on Saturday afternoon.
She has been identified as Cecilia Vilho.
“According to witnesses, the suspect came home and [found] the deceased and [others] eating dinner. He took a stick from the fire and started beating the deceased,” Simaho said.
The suspect has been arrested, but is currently under police guard at the Oshikuku Hospital where he is receiving psychiatric treatment. He is expected to appear in court this week.
