Geingob’s burial at Heroes’ Acre confirmed

The day after late president Hage Geingob's funeral – Monday, 26 February – has been declared a public holiday.
Late president Hage Geingob will be buried on Sunday, 25 February, at Heroes’ Acre just outside Windhoek. He died on Sunday, 6 February.
“In order to give a dignified burial and to give all Namibians time to mourn their beloved president Hage Geingob, President Nangolo Mbumba will declare Sunday, 25 February, a public holiday,” a government announcement read.
The Monday following the funeral will be observed as a public holiday as per the Public Holidays Act.
Daily memorial services will start today at the Windhoek Show Grounds to commemorate Geingob’s life, and will continue until 19 February, pending further announcements.
“The services will now take place at the Windhoek Show Grounds instead of the Sam Nujoma Stadium on 12 February and 13 February, and at the Namibia College of Open Learning [Namcol] Centre in Katutura from 14 February to 16 February. Announcements will be made for the week of 19 February,” the statement read.
No memorial services will take place at the residence of the late president. The public has been implored not to assemble at that residence.

Meanwhile, South African president Cyril Ramaphosa has hailed Geingob for the pivotal role he played in the fight to end apartheid.
He made the remarks following a visit to Geingob’s widow, Monica Geingos, this weekend to pay his respects.
He said Geingob, along with presidents Sam Nujoma and Hifikepunye Pohamba, was instrumental in Namibia’s anti-apartheid resistance.
“When Namibia became independent, we were overjoyed and we knew it had been president Geingob’s work, president Nujoma’s work and president Pohamba’s work, but importantly, the work of the people of Namibia,” Ramaphosa said on the sidelines of his visit to Geingos.
The South African president added that he viewed Geingob as an older brother.
“I learnt a lot from him as my older brother - from the way he led this country [to] the way he executed the governance of this country and [his] discipline...” he said.
