Woman accused of leaking nude photos out on bail
Case postponed until baby is born
If found guilty, Shikongeni could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to N$20 000, or both.
A 33-year-old woman accused of distributing nude photos of a 31-year-old radio presenter was granted bail of N$2 000 after making her first court appearance in the Oshakati Magistrate's Court on Friday.
Hilja Shikongeni appeared on two charges - transmission of obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy or indecent communication, and criminal defamation.
On Tuesday, 15 October, Shikongeni allegedly leaked the nude photos of the radio presenter “with intention to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass another person”.
Magistrate Mozay Jansen postponed the case to 23 April 2025 for further investigations and to allow Shikongeni - who is five months pregnant - to deliver her baby. The accused opted to acquire a private lawyer. As part of her bail conditions, she must refrain from making any direct or indirect contact with the victim, refrain from committing similar offences while on bail, keep a distance of 300 metres from the victim and avoid interfering with state witnesses or police investigations.
Five years in prison
If found guilty, Shikongeni could face up to five years in prison or a fine of up to N$20 000, or both.
Oshana police regional commander, Commissioner Naftal Lungameni Sakaria, said the presenter opened a case on 16 October after seeing naked pictures and videos of herself on social media, posted without her consent. “It is a trend we have seen increasing in the region,” he said. He added that a case was opened in terms of section 117, subsection 1(c), of the Communication Act.
Sakaria also warned that Namibians should be cognisant of the mental damage the circulation of such images may cause to another individual.
The State was represented by Prosecutor Pinias Jurgen Gaiseb.
