SHORTS: Uganda’s chief justice meets Namibian counterpart
Uganda’s Chief Justice Alfonse Chigamoy Owiny-Dollo paid a courtesy visit to Namibia’s Chief Justice Peter Shivute at the High Court on Friday. The meeting formed part of Owiny-Dollo’s broader visit to Namibia to study the country’s sustainable charcoal production practices.
Owiny-Dollo explained that his province in Uganda suffered severe environmental degradation due to irregular and uncontrolled charcoal production. The practice was eventually halted by a presidential decree. However, plans are now underway to revive the industry in Uganda, this time with a focus on sustainability and lessons drawn from Namibia’s approach.
During their discussions, Shivute extended an invitation for Owiny-Dollo to return to Namibia to share insights on Uganda’s implementation of plea bargaining. Shivute emphasized the need to establish plea bargaining in Namibia to improve the efficiency of the judicial process.
