‘Scammer’ soldier in court for fake jobs, military tents

STAFF REPORTER
Namibia Defence Force (NDF) official Martha Sheehama appeared in the Grootfontein Magistrate’s Court last week after she allegedly solicited money from several unemployed people, whom she promised jobs in the army in return.

Sheehama is also wanted by police in the Kunene Region, where two people opened criminal cases against her for allegedly taking their money in return for NDF tents she never delivered. A woman said she ordered chairs from Sheehama which were also never delivered.

The solider is alleged to have committed similar crimes in Swakopmund, where her court case has been transferred this week.

Sheehama appeared before Magistrate Bornface Konga in Grootfontein, facing a charge of theft by false pretenses. Ester Silvanus prosecuted.

Sheehama told the court that she will use a private lawyer in the case, before she was granted bail of N$1 000. She will appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate's Court on 8 May.

Kunene police regional commander James Nderura told Namibian Sun last week that Sheehama is wanted in the region for allegedly scamming people.

“Two people opened cases against her, saying they paid for NDF tents she was selling, but she disappeared after receiving the money without delivering the tents. We are looking for her,” he said.

Reacting to the matter, defence ministry spokesperson Colonel Petrus Shilumbu said: “Since the matter is with the police, all the information will be revealed during the police investigation as it is a registered civil case”.
