The Namibian Police, in partnership with the Office of the Ombudsman, have cautioned witnesses testifying in criminal cases to be arrive at court well prepared physically, mentally and emotionally.

This, Inspector Nikanor Paulus of the police in the Oshana Region, said is to uphold the dignity of the court and to make sure that whatever evidence they present can aid the case.

He also urged witnesses to always tell the truth, saying some lie in court, which puts the entire case in jeopardy as investigations will take longer for a matter which could be have easily been concluded.

“In criminal cases, the onus is on the State and it is not for the accused to prove that he is not guilty. The investigative officer must ensure that his/her witnesses are at court and may not leave the court without the permission of the presiding officer,” he said.

Paulus added that witness should know it is the right of the accused to plead not guilty, therefore they should not lose their temper during court proceedings.
