Man allegedly ordered son’s killing for insurance payout

In a sterling job by the Namibian Police, a 51-year-old man was arrested in Windhoek on Monday after he allegedly hired people to kill his 29-year-old son - in order to access up to N$2 million in an insurance payout.

George Kashava was not granted bail when he appeared before Magistrate Johannes Shuuveni yesterday.

He allegedly ordered a hit on his son, Willem Kashava, but the plot was foiled well in time, with police sources saying the younger man was “very lucky to be alive”.

Namibian Sun understands that George hired men to gun down his son in return for an unspecified amount of money. Uncomfortable with the job, the men allegedly alerted the police to the plot, and started working with law enforcement officers to thwart the murderous plan.

In the dark

George had allegedly been monitoring his son’s movements and one day alerted the would-be killers to his whereabouts, so that they could kidnap him for a specified period of time and then kill him.

By this time, the hired men were already working with the police. They drove to the place where Willem – who was completely in the dark about his father’s plot – was indeed found, as per George’s instructions.

The police then took Willem under its protection. The hired men spun George a tale that his son is being kept captive, and that he would be murdered on an agreed-upon date.

In the meantime, George created a ‘missing person’ poster and pre-empted the police by informing them that his son had gone missing.

Fake murder scene

On the agreed date, the police set up a fake murder scene, which was photographed and shown to the father as proof that the job had been done.

George promised to keep his end of the bargain, assuring the hired men that he would pay them as soon as a local insurance company has effected his payment.

Days later, the father informed the police that he received a call from an anonymous number, informing him that a body resembling his son had been found somewhere in Windhoek. George said the caller told him he found the body after experiencing a bad odour for days.

He directed officers to the fake scene the police itself had set up – which he was informed about by the hired men as where the killing took place.

George was arrested at that scene on Monday. Willem is undergoing counselling with the help of the police.

No bail

George appeared in the Katutura Magistrate’s Court yesterday, charged with conspiracy to commit a crime, attempted murder, fraud and defeating or obstructing the course of justice.

His case has been remanded to 16 January 2024 for further investigations.

Prosecutor Cuthbert Lusipani, representing the State, said it is in the public's interest that he be kept in police custody at the Windhoek Correctional Facility.
