Maasdorp makes first court appearance
Faces murder, theft charges
The matter has been postponed to August.
Murder-accused Wentzel Maasdorp (39) made his first appearance in the Windhoek Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He has been charged with the murder of 40-year-old Delia Weimers-Maasdorp, whom he was reportedly in a relationship with.
The charge is read in accordance with the provisions of the Domestic Violence Act, while he faces other counts of theft of a motor vehicle, a cell phone and a television.
Maasdorp appeared before magistrate Mutafela Olga Likando and was represented pro bono by Milton Engelbrecht, while senior public prosecutor Bernadine Bertolini represented the State.
He remains in custody at the Klein Windhoek Police Station, and the matter was postponed to 21 August to allow Maasdorp to apply for legal aid.
The State objected to bail, citing the seriousness of the charges, fear of the accused absconding and not standing trial, and investigations still being at an early stage.
Nationwide manhunt
Maasdorp was arrested in Windhoek on Tuesday after a speedy nationwide manhunt.
Namibian Police spokesperson Kauna Shikwambi told Namibian Sun that he was intercepted at a service station in the capital while he was trying to get a lift to Rehoboth.
This after he was initially spotted in Rundu in the early hours of Tuesday, where he reportedly abandoned the victim’s BMW.
After being addicted to crack cocaine for over a decade, Maasdorp reportedly went to rehab, where he got clean. He has, however, since had a relapse, according to sources.
