Liquidators win N$9.5m diamond case

Diamonds worth around N$9.5 million, which have been in the possession of the Namibian Police for years, will be handed over to well-known liquidators David Bruni and Ian McLaren.

High Court judge Collins Parker issued a court order last week instructing the inspector general of the Namibian police to hand over the diamonds to the liquidators.

In the court application, Bruni and McLaren claimed they were entitled to the diamonds as the liquidators of Bret Investments. However, when the police delayed handing over the diamonds, they approached the court in 2022, alleging that the police were hampering the execution of their mandate as liquidators.

The police argued during the court case that the diamonds were obtained through an illegal transaction because the person who sold the diamonds was not authorised to sell them in terms of the law.

However, Parker ruled in favour of the liquidators. The court order further stipulated that the Diamond Commission must issue a permit to the liquidators in accordance with the relevant law on diamonds.
