Appointments effective as of April
The Judicial Service Commission has announced that High Court judge George Coleman will serve for another year following the decision to postpone his retirement.
The Judicial Service Commission announced last week that President Hage Geingob has appointed two new High Court judges.
In addition to the appointment of acting judges David Munsu and Duard Kesslau as judges of the High Court, Philanda Christiaan was appointed as an acting judge.
Moreover, High Court judge George Coleman's retirement has been postponed by one year following a decision to extend his retirement age to 66.
To the bench
Munsu will serve as a High Court judge from 1 April. He obtained his law degree in 2008 from the University of Namibia (Unam).
Subsequently, he has been involved in the law for about 10 years and has served as a magistrate.
He was appointed as acting judge in the High Court from 25 January 2021 to 30 June 2021 and again from 31 March 2023 to the present.
Munsu participated in the Aspirant Judges Training Programme, an intensive training programme developed by the Namibian Judiciary, aimed at training persons who aspire to appointment to high judicial offices.
Kesslau will also serve as a High Court judge from 1 April. Kesslau's legal career spans about 20 years as a magistrate and acting judge of the High Court.
Kesslau obtained a bachelor's degrees in commerce and law in 1998 from the University of the Free State.
Important task
Christiaan was appointed as an acting judge of the High Court for the period from 1 April to 31 March next year.
This is Christiaan's third period as an acting judge. She has served as chief magistrate since September 2009.
Judge George Coleman has served as a High Court judge since the start of 2022.
He was due to retire in January at the age of 65, but his retirement age was extended by one year to the age of 66.
"The extension was introduced with the aim of enabling the High Court to deal with its workload quickly," the Judicial Service Commission noted.
In a statement, the commission congratulated Coleman, Munsu, Kesslau and Christiaan on their appointments and wished them "success in carrying out their difficult task to deliver justice for all."
