17-year prison term for brother's murder
News in short
Simon Haimbodi (24) was sentenced to 17 years in prison this week for the murder of his brother in 2021.
The sentence was handed down in the Eehnana Regional Court.
It is alleged the accused, who was 22 years old at the time, assaulted Jonas Haimbodi by hitting him on the forehead with a hammer, thereby inflicting fatal injuries.
The victim died at the Katutura State Hospital in Windhoek.
Public prosecutor Sakaria Kuutondokwa argued that the accused was convicted of a serious and prevalent crime.
"Our court rolls are filled with domestic violence cases such as this one," he said.
Delivering the judgment, magistrate Adrian Sangunji emphasised that murder has become commonplace in society and that the courts must impose severe sentences.
"Lenient court sentences are out of place in the current climate of societal violence; the extent of severity will depend on the particular circumstances of each case," he said.
