The Chinese ambassador to Namibia, Zhao Weiping, visited President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah at State House on Monday to convey his and Chinese President Xi Jinping’s congratulations to Namibia’s recently inaugurated president.

Nandi-Ndaitwah thanked the Chinese president for being among the first to offer congratulations following her successful election last year and for China sending a special envoy to attend Namibia's 35th independence anniversary celebrations. According to the Namibian president, this gesture reflects the strong relationship between the two countries.

Nandi-Ndaitwah further emphasised that Namibia will continue to collaborate with China based on mutual benefits, according to a State House press release.

Ambassador Zhao said the Chinese government looks forward to strengthening the bilateral relationship between the two countries and will provide support where needed.

International relations

The visit comes less than two weeks after Yury Trutnev, the deputy prime minister of Russia, visited Nandi-Ndaitwah on 1 April.

Following that visit, State House spokesperson Alfredo Hengari said the Namibian president emphasised the need for stronger cooperation, particularly in the areas of energy and value addition to Namibia’s natural resources. Hengari noted that Russia excels in nuclear energy, while Namibia is rich in uranium.

Trutnev and the president also discussed education, with Namibian students already studying in Russia.

More recently, the British high commissioner to Namibia, Charles Moore, paid a courtesy visit to the president on Wednesday, 9 April, to bid farewell before returning to the United Kingdom.

During the visit, Nandi-Ndaitwah again emphasised trade and investment, specifically to help Namibia address local unemployment. The president stressed that existing relations between the two countries should be further strengthened in the oil and gas sectors to create more job opportunities for young Namibians. Moore highlighted that trade between the two countries has already tripled over the last four years.

Amid the disruption of global trade relations caused by US president Donald Trump’s tariffs, no visit has yet been made from the US embassy in Windhoek to State House.

Brumilda Gertze, a protocol assistant at the embassy, said they are still in the process of scheduling a visit.
