BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS TO FIGHT CHILD LABOUR

BETTER WORKING CONDITIONS TO FIGHT CHILD LABOUR: Meet Yabao Oumarou (46), a father of six and a cocoa farmer from Côte d'Ivoire, who learned that improved working conditions for adults helps keep children in school.

His story highlights the crucial role of workplace safety in combating child labour. Yabao’s commitment to safety and health at work has not only changed his life but also brought hope to his community.

He received training through the ILO ACCEL Africa project, run in partnership with the foreign affairs ministry of the Netherlands, which aims to accelerate the elimination of child labour by helping communities to tackle its root causes. "My motivation to do the training was to help combat child labour. There have been several awareness campaigns about child labour in our cooperative, so it is an important topic for all the planters. But the training was a real discovery for me. We didn't just learn about child protection. We also learnt about health and safety and providing access to facilities for well-being," he said, adding that the training changed his perception of child labour. "I came to understand that if you don't take care of your health, then you won't be able to work. And if you aren't able do your job properly, then you'll become a burden, either to your wife or to your children."
