NHE hands over 119 houses in Swakopmund
Mass housing delivers over 4 000 homes
The Erongo governor said despite various challenges, they have "successfully handed over these homes, bringing joy and stability to 119 families".
The ministry of urban and rural development officially handed over 119 completed houses - built under the mass housing development programme - in Swakopmund yesterday. The event signified a significant achievement in ongoing efforts to address housing shortages in Namibia, minister Erastus Uutoni said.
He highlighted the journey of overcoming challenges that had previously stalled construction on site.
"There was a total of 505 housing units that were standing uncompleted on this site for years due to a legal dispute between the main contractor and its subcontractors," he said. He further commended the efforts of New Era Investments and the government team for their dedication in eventually completing the units.
The completion of these 119 homes is part of a larger initiative that aims to deliver affordable housing across Namibia, he noted. "Under the mass housing development programme, a total of 4 446 housing units have been delivered to date," Uutoni announced, highlighting the government's commitment to housing as a top developmental priority.
Joy and stability
Erongo governor Neville Andre Itope emphasised the collaborative nature of the achievement, acknowledging the contributions of various stakeholders - including the government, National Housing Enterprise (NHE), private sector and community members. "Despite the challenges faced, including delays and contractor disputes, we have successfully handed over these homes, bringing joy and stability to 119 families," he said.
The event was also marked by reflections on past leadership and future commitments. "The visionary leadership of our leaders and teamwork at the implementation level has resulted in the delivery of these homes," Uutoni said, recalling the legacy of previous presidents and their contributions to housing development in Namibia.
Looking forward, the ministry remains committed to completing 572 more housing units across various regions, including 186 units in Swakopmund. Efforts are underway to resolve outstanding disputes and expedite construction, ensuring timely delivery of homes to those in need, the minister assured.
Meanwhile, NHE board deputy chairperson Hasting Tjipueja reiterated the organisation's dedication to the provision of housing. "The NHE is fully cognisant of the colossal task before us," he said, pledging to maintain momentum in housing delivery with support from key stakeholders.
