Namport syncrolift out of order
SHORT NEWS
The Namport syncrolift at Walvis Bay has been out of service since 1 February after a wire rope snapped during docking operations.
The company confirmed on Tuesday that no vessels were on the repair bays at the time and the affected vessel was safely removed from the platform.
“The vessel’s weight was within the lifting capacity limit, and the ropes undergo annual fitness tests. The last test was conducted in May last year,” Namport’s Cliff Shikuambi said. An on-site investigation was carried out following the failure.
Shikuambi said repairs are expected to be completed within two weeks from the date of the breakdown.
The syncrolift has been a critical facility at the port since its commissioning in 1973. In 2017, Namport undertook a N$10 million repair and maintenance project on the ageing infrastructure.
