Onandjokwe hospital head resigns

STAFF REPORTER
Medical superintendent of Onandjokwe Intermediate Hospital, Dr Akutu Munyika, has tendered his resignation, effective 6 July.

He has been in the job for nearly five years, having replaced Russian Dr Igor Petrov in November 2017 in an acting capacity before being confirmed in the job in May 2018.

He did not cite reasons for his resignation, but Namibian Sun understands that it could be due to work overload. For five years, Munyika doubled as both the head of the hospital as well as the head of the surgery department.

When approached for comment yesterday, he did not want to comment on the reasons for his resignation, but said he was leaving in good faith.

In his resignation letter, seen by Namibian Sun, he wrote: “During my tenure, I have done my level best to serve the hospital despite many challenges that are not only unique to our hospital, but to our ministry”.

Shifting focus

Under his stewardship, the hospital saw the completion of renovations to all wards, construction of the paediatric and maternity wards - which is still ongoing, construction of the head of department offices as well as ongoing bi-annual endoscopy outreach services and the rollout of teaching and training programmes.

“I have enjoyed double responsibilities of being both the head of department of surgery as well as the medical superintendent and have done my best to cope and balance the responsibilities.

“I will, therefore, concentrate and focus solely on the responsibilities of the departmental head of surgery going forward,” Munyika told health ministry executive director Ben Nangombe in his resignation letter.
