International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every year on 12 May to pay tribute to Florence Nightingale, who is widely considered the founder of modern nursing.

President Hage Geingob joined Namibians in celebrating this day to recognise nurses’ contributions to healthcare and raise awareness of the crucial role they play in promoting the health and wellness of the people.

The celebrations were held under the theme ‘our nurses, our future’, with the president saying government is aware of the constantly evolving nature of the profession.

“Therefore, government notes the various challenges faced by nurses to effectively deliver on their mandate and is thus committed to continue creating an enabling and conducive environment for the nursing profession to flourish,” he said.

Vital work

The Omusati Region also joined in to honour nurses for the crucial role they play.

The region’s health director Alfons Amoomo said they most sincerely appreciate and celebrate all nurses’ vital work around the region and thank them for their contribution to quality healthcare services. He made specific mention of nurses’ “unwavering dedication in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic”.

Amoomo said the future depends on every nurse, every voice, to not only be on the frontlines of care, but also be on the frontlines of change.

Challenges

He said some of the challenges future nurses will face include poor status and pay, under-representation in decision-making at the highest levels, long working hours, workplace violence and hazards, staff shortage, an ageing population, educational insufficiencies, personal health problems and inadequacy of professional development.

“However, I want to encourage fellow nurses that as you go through challenges, you become stronger and stronger. Challenges call for creativity, challenges keep you humble and amplify your achievements,” Amoomo said.
