The health ministry received cold-chain equipment worth N$28 million from the Japanese government.

According to executive director Ben Nangombe, the donation – facilitated by the United Nations Children's Fund (Unicef) – will strengthen the immunisation supply chain in Namibia.

"This donation stands as a shining example of international solidarity, reflecting the deep-rooted friendship between our nations and the shared commitment to ensuring the health and well-being of our citizens," he said.

The donation includes nine walk-in cold rooms, three pieces of ultra cold chain equipment, one incinerator, 350 vaccine carriers, 295 fridge tags, 21 refrigerators, spare parts, tool kits, 37 laptops and desktops, 30 voltage stabilisers and 38 remote temperature monitoring systems for vaccine stores.

In 2022, the Japanese embassy pumped N$28.7 million in grants into Namibia through Unicef, which oversaw the expansion of cold-chain facilities in Namibia.

"In collaboration with the ministry, we supported enhanced infrastructure, equipment, transportation and training for healthcare professionals... The cold-chain equipment being handed over today is not just hardware; it is a lifeline that will enable the safe and efficient distribution of vaccines and essential medical supplies," Unicef deputy representative Jecob Nyamadzawo said.
