Venaani wants Witbooi shrine
News in short
Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) leader McHenry Venaani has proposed that government erect a shrine honouring Namibian liberation icon Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi, saying he made the ultimate sacrifice for the country’s freedom.
He made the proposal in the National Assembly last week, saying Witbooi’s resistance against German imperialism was an act of defiance and a clarion call for Namibia’s autonomy and territorial integrity.
“As the first Namibian leader to rise against foreign occupation, he set a precedent for resistance that still resonates in our efforts to assert Namibia on the world stage,” Venaani said.
When erected, the shrine would also help bring about economic benefits to Vaalgras, where he motivated it be erected.
“As a national monument, it would naturally attract both domestic and international visitors. This could bring investment and tourism to Vaalgras, driving local economic development,” Venaani said.
“An ever-lighting shrine to Kaptein Hendrik Witbooi at Vaalgras is not just a proposal, it is a necessary step in the evolution of Namibia as a nation.”
