Tsumeb to consult AG on N$1.3m claim by exonerated employee

The Tsumeb municipality plans to consult the attorney general's office on whether they should reimburse its finance manager Karolina Damaseb around N$1.3 million she claims to have incurred while defending herself in an investigation initiated against her by the council.This was confirmed yesterday by a reliable council source who attended Wednesday’s council meeting where the matter was discussed.“Council decided to consult the attorney general’s office as to whether we must pay Damaseb what she is demanding,” the source said.Tsumeb mayor Mathews Hangula refused to comment on the AG claims, but did confirm that Damaseb’s claim was discussed at the meeting. He added that it was premature to share more details with the media."We are doing our due diligence on the matter and probably what you heard is part of that,” Hangula said.Hefty legal fees Damaseb was suspended in July 2021 on those allegations.On 4 December last year, she was exonerated after being found not guilty on all charges.Last week Namibian Sun reported that Damaseb claims she spent close to N$1.3 million in legal fees fighting charges of corruption, dishonesty, fraud and forgery.In a letter dated 16 January and addressed to Tsumeb acting CEO, Frans Enkali, she demanded to be paid back.She wrote that the legal fees, totalling N$1 270 994, “have placed a considerable financial burden on me...”.kenya@nmh-hub.com.na
