The Swakopmund municipality has proposed the introduction of special municipal tariffs for account holders receiving social and disability grants.

Spokesperson Linda Mupupa said the matter has yet to be discussed at management committee level; however, the municipality is currently creating a database of all eligible residents. A notice was sent out last week in this regard.

According to a 30 July council agenda, with the registration of seniors for a debt write-off campaign, the municipal council received applications from account holders who receive social and disability grants from the government.

These residents argued that the grants they receive is their only means to sustain a livelihood and, as a result, they resorted to applying for the debt write-off initiative meant for senior citizens.

The municipality’s submission proposes the implementation of special tariffs for these account holders in order to provide financial relief to vulnerable members of the community.

As per the recommendation, the council proposed that these special tariffs coincide with those of senior citizens, which are as follows: N$25 for water, N$71 for refuse removal and N$168.40 for sewerage.

In order for an account holder to qualify for the proposed special tariffs, the property or erf must be registered in their name, the municipality said. Account holders renting properties can also submit rental agreements in order to qualify.

A final decision on the matter will be made at the next management committee meeting.
