Surveying begins in the informal settlement of Okahandja
5,000 residential and business plots targeted
A certified professional surveyor began work yesterday, with the surveying and demarcation process expected to be completed by June 2025.
In a significant step toward structured urban development, the mayor of Okahandja Beatrice Kotungondo hosted a community engagement on Saturday to officially launch the formalisation process for the town’s informal settlements.
Residents from Oshetu 1, 2, and 3, Ekunde, and Five Rand gathered to hear the announcement.
A certified professional surveyor began work on Monday, 7 April, with the surveying and demarcation process expected to be completed by June 2025.
“This is a milestone in our journey toward dignified living for all residents – something the community has been praying for,” said Mayor Kotungondo. She called on residents to fully support and cooperate with the surveying team, saying, “Your support will ensure the process is effective and completed within the expected timeframe.”
The formalisation process will see 5,000 residential and business plots across the three settlements surveyed and properly demarcated – a move welcomed with visible relief and celebration by community members.
“I am so happy that it is finally happening after all the years of struggle,” said one resident, expressing the sentiments of many.
In addition to the surveying update, Kotungondo also announced a long-awaited road infrastructure project that will connect Smarties Extensions 9, 8, and 6 to the Nau-Aib road.
“This is something the residents of Smarties have been crying for over the past 13 years,” the mayor noted.
The N$7 million development is slated for completion by December 2025, and is expected to significantly improve mobility, safety, and service delivery within the municipality.
