Sinimbo aligns Kavango West development objectives to Swapo manifesto

Phillipus Josef
Newly appointed Kavango West governor Verna Sinimbo has pledged to align the region’s development priorities with the Swapo party election manifesto, aiming to transform political promises into tangible change.

“As governor, I am pleased that 'the Kavango West Region Developmental Priority Needs' is fully aligned with the priorities outlined in the Swapo Party Election Manifesto, which provides the policy blueprint for the next five years,” she emphasised.

Speaking at a recent handover ceremony in Nkurenkuru, she said the document will guide her administration’s path forward.

Sinimbo welcomed the alignment between the regional document and national priorities, specifically in areas like infrastructure development, health, youth empowerment, food self-reliance, education and social welfare.

This pledge comes against the backdrop of persistent socio-economic challenges.

Media reports over the past few years have consistently highlighted the region's high unemployment rate of over 50%, crumbling rural roads that hinder access to services and subpar healthcare facilities such as the Nkurenkuru district hospital.

Inadequate classroom space and under-resourced schools also remain key concerns.

Accelerate progress

Sinimbo touched on the fact that real progress will require collective action from government, traditional authorities and communities to drive inclusive, sustainable development across the region.

“I firmly believe that meaningful development will only be realised when all stakeholders work together: the regional council, town council, regional offices, ministries and agencies, settlements, traditional authorities, churches, community-based organisations and the residents of Kavango West," she said.

"By fostering unity, teamwork and a shared vision, we can accelerate development, address socio-economic challenges and create lasting opportunities for our people.”

During the welcoming ceremony, former governor Sirkka Ausiku called on the new leadership to sustain efforts in liaising with the central government for development.

“Progress in the region continues to be held back by poor infrastructure, which includes limited access roads, insufficient water and electricity supply, and ongoing gaps in the education and health sectors,” she stressed.
