Pay back the money

Kenya Kambowe
Civil servants who secured a seat in parliament but did not resign from their workplaces as required by law, will need to pay back the money.

This is according to secretary to Cabinet, George Simaata who in a letter dated 16 January, instructed all executive directors and chief regional officers to ensure that the civil servants affected must comply with the Amendment Electoral Act of 2024.

According to the act, civil servants who have secured a seat in the August house are deemed to have resigned on the day the National Assembly election results are announced.

The 2024 NA election results were announced on 3 December 2024.

However Network Media Hub (NMH) recently exposed how some civil servants, despite having secured a seat in the NA, still clung to their jobs, hence Simaata’s letter saying that the law should be complied with and overpayments to those individuals must be recovered.

“It is advised that all overpayments made to date should be recovered through deductions from the staff members’ leave days or pension, as appropriate,” Simaata wrote.
