Genocide descendants warned against alleged bribes
Descendants were told they would likely face an uphill battle against claims for genocide payouts on the side of the Namibian and German governments.

Professor Mutjinde Katjiua, one of the men claiming to be the Ovaherero paramount chief, alleges that government is collaborating with the German government with the aim of further marginalising descendants of the 1904–1908 Nama/Ovaherero genocide.

Katjiua made these remarks recently while addressing descendants of the genocide in Lephalale, South Africa.

He called on them to protest against the Namibian government for its handling of the genocide claim.

"In an effort to further marginalise the genocide victims and to further impoverish them, it is the most shameful act that any government can commit on the African continent," Katjiua said.

He further warned that government would try to bribe them to put aside their claim to the genocide.

"We must expect people within our midst to be bought to fight back. We must prepare to be vigilant, steadfast and uncompromising in the name of our ancestors," he stressed.

Be prepared for a fight

Descendants were also warned that government was likely to put up a fight against claims to a genocide payout on the side of the Namibian and German governments.

"This is not going to be an easy fight. It is the first time in history that the government of a liberation is being taken to court for collaborating with the former colonial masters," he said.

Katjiua also told descendants of the genocide that the Namibian government did not care about them, despite their Namibian heritage.

"It is unfortunate that the Namibian government does not have any sympathy for people living in the diaspora. You are not its concern; in fact, the Namibian government does not care about you. That being the position of the Namibian government, you must be aware and take care of people being sent around to bribe you and confuse you in the ranks of the Namibian government," Katjiua said.
