NamWater has announced planned water supply interruptions - lasting for 10 hours on two days - due to essential construction work at the Ondangwa pump station and reservoir and the new pipeline between Ondangwa and Oshali pump stations.

The water utility’s head of public relations and corporate communications, Lot Ndamanomhata, yesterday said the interruption is necessary to allow the contractor to complete the connection of the new pipeline and integrate the new infrastructure with existing systems.

In August, NamWater announced four major projects worth over N$1 billion, including the Ondangwa-Omutsegwonime bulk water supply scheme, which is undergoing an upgrade to meet increasing water demand and address frequent supply interruptions.

The first phase of this project, at a cost of N$91 million and fully funded by NamWater, focuses on replacing a 17-kilometre stretch of pipeline from Ondangwa to Oshali, which will be causing the water interruption in the coming days.

The other project is the N$15 million Henties Bay reservoir pipeline upgrade, which involves replacing a critical five-kilometre water pipeline from the Omdel aquifer.

Ndamanomhata said the work is crucial for the ongoing upgrade of the Ondangwa-Oluno/Indangungu pump station and will result in improved water supply capacity and reliability once completed.

A day without water

The planned shutdown is expected tomorrow, 3 October, from 08:00 to 18:00 and next Thursday, 10 October, from 08:00 to 18:00.

Affected areas include Ondangwa, Oshali, Omutsegonime, Omuthiya, Oniipa and the surrounding areas.

“We are making every effort to reduce the interruption time and complete the work as quickly as possible. The interruption is expected to last for seven to nine hours, and full water supply should be restored shortly after the work is completed,” Ndamanomhata said.

Essential service institutions such as hospitals, schools, police stations and clinics facing critical water supply needs are urged to contact NamWater’s manager for operations Abraham Asser Ashipala at 081 129 9483, or Oshikoto schemes superintendent Nicodemus Ndemwiimba at 081 145 5267.

Ndamanomhata said water delivery arrangements via tankers can be coordinated to ensure uninterrupted service during the interruptions.

“We urge affected communities to make the necessary preparations to mitigate the impact of the water supply interruption,” he added.
