Ombudsman reacts to Amushelelo criticism
Ombudsman Basilius Dyakugha issued a media statement on Thursday in response to a Facebook post penned by activist Michael Amushelelo, in which he accused Dyakugha of being "either incompetent or too weak to perform his functions and duties."
On Wednesday, Amushelelo accused Dyakugha on social media of not fulfilling his mandate and exercising his powers to independently investigate the Namibian Police or state entities.
"Because he only wants to be a salary collector, he does not fulfil his mandate. We have many useless individuals like Basilius Dyakugha who just waste our taxpayers' money," Amushelelo argued.
"We need people to be placed in positions of authority who have absolutely no fear or favour in the execution of their official duties," he added in the post, to which he attached a photo of Dyakugha.
Open to the public
Dyakugha, in his statement, emphasised that his office has no record of cases reported by Amushelelo.
"The ombudsman's office is open to public criticism, as the ombudsman's office is a public institution, and at the core of our functions are the people, regardless of the nature of the matter for which they seek redress," he stated.
"As an ombudsman, I act impartially and would like to make it clear that anyone is welcome to approach our office with their complaints. The ombudsman's office has answers to all issues in the public domain, and these answers can be obtained from my office," he added.
