Nujoma had courage – Shuumbwa

Kenya Kambowe
Omukwaniilwa of the Ondonga Traditional Authority, Fillemon Shuumbwa Nangolo, on Friday praised Sam Nujoma, describing the late struggle icon as a brave man who instilled courage among his soldiers during the fight for independence.

Shuumbwa made this remark on Friday during the Ohangwena regional memorial service that was held at Eenhana in honour of Nujoma.

“There are qualities one is born with... [such as] cowardice, being afraid, backtracking and being untrustworthy, but those characteristics were not within Nujoma,” Shuumbwa said.

A brave leader

Shuumbwa shared some of the tales he heard about Nujoma during the liberation struggle, such as the late president's courage to view the bodies of soldiers who had died during battle.

“If you go back in time, apparently during the liberation struggle, the remains of the soldiers who died in the battlefield after they were killed by the then South African army were brought before Nujoma, as he was the last person to be informed about what had transpired at the front,” Shuumbwa said.

"Just imagine being brought the remains of 100 people this month and next month. Who are you that cannot become afraid and want to retreat, but it did not affect Nujoma at all," he noted.

“He would talk with a brave and commanding voice, saying that they would defeat the South African army, which was well-established and equipped. He, however, had the courage; hence, the people who were with him were also brave.”

Shuumbwa said that although Nujoma has now departed, he is united with all the heroes who passed before him.

“He is going to join all those heroes who died before him and he will remain within us, and we should emulate what he stood for,” Shuumbwa said.

Thousands attended the memorial service in Eenhana last week to pay their last respects to the late Nujoma.
