Namibia emerged a stronger and united in 2024 - Mbumba

Tuyeimo Haidula
President Nangolo Mbumba described 2024 as a year of immense challenges and mixed fortunes for Namibia. However, he emphasised that the nation’s collective grief - following the death of then president Hage Geingob in February 2024 - and adversity have forged a stronger and more united country.

Mbumba made these remarks in his address on New Year's Eve, as he wished Namibians a prosperous 2024. Speaking with mixed emotions, he expressed determination and courage as he reflected on the past year’s events, which are punctuated by his own ascendance to the position of head of state, folloing Geingob's death.

“Our governance architecture was tested but remained firm throughout the far-reaching institutional changes that occurred on that fateful day – the day I became the fourth president,” Mbumba stated. He commended Namibians for their steadfastness and unity during the period of national mourning, which culminated in Geingob’s burial ceremony.

Challenges and relief efforts

Mbumba highlighted the country’s struggle with drought, which led to the declaration of a state of emergency in May. In response, the government rolled out emergency drought relief programs to assist affected communities.

Looking ahead, he urged all offices, ministries, and agencies to remain vigilant as the rainy season progresses, emphasizing the need to ensure no one suffers from hunger or food insecurity.

A historic milestone

Reflecting on the milestones of 2024, Mbumba celebrated Namibia’s achievement in electing its first female president, Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, marking a significant step forward in the nation’s commitment to gender inclusion. Nandi-Ndaitwah will be sworn in as head of state in March.

“It is a milestone for our national efforts in gender inclusion and opens a new chapter in the noble pursuit of prosperity for our nation,” he remarked.

A message of hope

Mbumba described New Year’s Eve as an opportunity for Namibians to reflect on the year that has passed and to plan effectively for the year ahead. He expressed optimism, stating that the New Year brings hope and promise for a new season.

As Namibians look forward to 2025, Mbumba’s message serves as both a reflection on resilience and a call to action for continued unity and progress.
