Mutorwa opens Okatana-Ongwediva road
New road tackles congestion
The Roads Authority is also currently re-gravelling three roads under their three-year programme, which include the Adolf-Ongha, Okapya-Onakamwandi and Okapya-Okaku-Ohalushu roads.
Works and transport minister John Mutorwa on Friday officially opened the Okatana-Ongwediva road in the Oshana Region.
Since the construction of the new road between Okatana and Ongwediva, congestion has been reduced sharply between Oshakati and Ongwediva, as residents from Oshakati, Ongwediva, Ehenye and Ekuku use the road as it provides a shorter and more convenient route to Oshakati and Endola towards Oshikango, Onhuno and Eenhana.
"This will decrease road accidents and enable road users to get to their destinations safely and in a shorter time period," Mutorwa said.
He said the upgraded road will also stimulate economic growth in the northern regions in terms of enhancing the movement of goods and services and will be a boost for the agricultural sector.
The Okatana-Ongwediva road was constructed at a cost of N$15 million. An amount of about N$400 000 was used to establish access roads to Joseph Mbangula Combined School and Okatana Church. Speed humps were constructed close to the school as part of the project’s corporate social responsibility programme.
Support growth
Roads Authority (RA) chief executive officer Conrad Lutombi said the newly inaugurated road is an important asset to the region.
He said it is common knowledge that a good road network facilitates growth and, by extension, contributes to national prosperity.
"Here in the Oshana Region, the economic potential is exponential, as evidenced by the fast-paced economic growth, increased business activities, and buying power taking place in the region," he said.
Lutombi said the RA is currently working on the Omatando-Onamutayi road. He said the project has faced challenges such as accessing material for the ongoing upgrading to low-volume sealing of the road.
"The issue has since been resolved and significant progress has been made on the project," he said.
He said the RA is re-gravelling three roads under their three-year programme, which include the Adolf-Ongha, Okapya-Onakamwandi and Okapya-Okaku-Ohalushu roads.
Oshana governor Elia Irimari urged Oshakati and Oshikuku inhabitants who complain about the lack of roads to be "patient", saying the government is doing its best with the available funds.
Irimari said no one will be left out.
