Ministry distances itself from editor’s suspension
News in short
Government has denied involvement in the suspension of New Era managing editor Johnathan Beukes.
The ministry of information communication technology, through its acting executive director Elizabeth Kamutuezu, on Wednesday afternoon issued a press release saying it is not involved into the day-to-day running of the state-owned New Era Publication Corporation (NEPC).
Beukes was suspended last Friday, and the suspension remains in force until the end of October.
Kamutueze said their office has recently received numerous enquiries regarding the suspension.
"MICT does not interfere in the internal affairs of NEPC. The operations of the public enterprise are directed and managed by NEPC's board of directors and management,” she said, adding that it should be noted that neither the minister nor the executive director are involved with or interfere in the daily operations of NEPC.
Kamutueze added that there are processes, systems and procedures that need to be followed and the newspaper’s management is vested with these powers.
“The ministry will thus not be dragged into operational issues of NEPC," she said.
