Newly appointed Kavango East governor Hamunyera Hambyuka has vowed to revive the region’s green schemes as part of efforts to combat food insecurity.

Speaking at his official handover ceremony in Rundu on Monday, Hambyuka stressed the need to harness local resources to benefit communities before considering exports.

His remarks were in response to outgoing governor Bonifatius Wakudumo’s call for continued regional development.

“With the natural resources at our disposal, I am confident that we can reverse this situation and restore the region to its former glory," Hambyuka said.

"The green scheme projects – Shadikongoro, Shitemo, Ndonga-Linena and Uvhungu Vhungu – once had a positive impact on the lives of residents in both Kavango regions and beyond. The time has come for us to work not just for the sake of working but with a clear green target to enhance service delivery for our people," he added.

Beyond agriculture, Hambyuka outlined a broader development agenda aimed at addressing persistent social and infrastructure challenges in the region.

"Like other regions, Kavango East faces various social development challenges, including unemployment, shortages of clean drinking water, lack of water pipelines and boreholes, rural electrification, poor road networks, limited quarantine facilities and long distances to clinics and schools," he noted.

“These are challenges we must tackle head-on, under the banner of what I call Team Kavango East. Our priority must be to deliver much-needed services to our communities, restoring their confidence and trust in a better tomorrow.”

Wakudumo's tenure

Outgoing governor Wakudumo reflected on his time in office, expressing gratitude for the support he received.

“When I assumed office, I committed to serving with diligence, integrity and dedication. Throughout my tenure, I worked closely with various stakeholders to address critical issues such as infrastructure development, youth empowerment, economic growth and social welfare," he said.

Wakudumo acknowledged both achievements and challenges while underscoring the resilience of the people of Kavango East.

“This journey has been both humbling and fulfilling. I leave office with gratitude, knowing that I have served to the best of my ability. The foundation we have built will continue to drive the region forward."
