Kenya Kambowe
The Katima Mulilo Town Council. through a public-private partnership. plans to service between 8 000 and 10 000 plots in order to address the land and housing backlog at the far north-eastern town.

According to Katima Mulilo CEO Raphael Liswaniso, the council together with WLD-Fullbright will service 350 hectares of land.

The targeted beneficiaries are the low-income earners.

With the project still in the planning stage, Liswaniso said if all goes well, the servicing of the land situated near the Nampower power station will commence in October and conclude by the end of February next year.

“We are planning to service 350 ha of land which will give us between 8 000 to 10 000 plots. The aim is to address the housing backlog of the town which stands at about 8 000,” Liswaniso explained.

“If everything goes according to plan, we will start with the servicing in October and finish by February next year. The beneficiaries will be able to construct their homes soon thereafter.”

Reduce plot size

Liswaniso said that they plan to engage the line ministry to allow the council through the PPP to have plots in the size range of 200 to 250 square metres.

Currently, plots are expected to be 300 square metres or more.

“We want the line ministry to allow us to reduce the size of plots to 200 and 250 square metres as opposed to the required 300. This will assist us greatly in terms of spacing."

Liswaniso said the servicing will include water, roads, sewerage and electricity.
