Green hydrogen to flood Lüderitz with jobs – Kandjoze
NDP must not be business as usual, PM warns
Kandjoze said government did not sign for any loans related to green hydrogen, adding that the funds Namibia will receive will be in the form of grants.
National Planning Commission (NPC) director-general Obeth Kandjoze says the harbour town of Lüderitz will be flooded with jobs once the green hydrogen project commences.
He was speaking during the launch of the formulation process of the sixth National Development Plan (NDP).
"We will start with the //Karas Region for however long it takes, moving through Hardap. Thereafter, we will spread out to the rest of the country. Lüderitz will be flooded by the number of jobs this project will bring.”
According to him, ministries have direct instructions to visit every town in Namibia to give overviews of the green hydrogen project, its benefits and the job opportunities attached to it.
Kandjoze also rubbished claims that government is irresponsibly borrowing money to fund its equity in this project.
"There is no loan that I know of that the minister of finance signed off. A grant is what it is," he said.
Final stretch
Also speaking at the occasion, Prime Minister Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said NDP6 is the final stretch to achieving Vision 2030, and should therefore not be treated as ‘business as usual’.
"The strides Namibia made in terms of eradicating poverty were almost completely wiped out by these blows to the economy.
“There should be no business as usual. We should identify game-changers across sectors and ministries and we should adopt innovative approaches," she said.
She added that resource allocation should be a priority in order to optimise outcomes.
"I am glad to note that the United Nations system is providing support to Namibia to adopt and actualise the integrated national financing framework to scale up existing developmental financial flows and to identify and leverage non-traditional, innovative forms of financing.”
She further said while Namibia is becoming a key player in green hydrogen and oil, NDP6 should consolidate these "new realities" into tangible results.
"[Tangible results] in terms of sustainable development and national capacity development in the form of acquiring skills and knowledge, improved governance, employment, industrialisation and wealth creation that translates to improved welfare conditions for Namibians.”
Kuugongelwa-Amadhila added that NDP6 should further consolidate social protection programmes to optimise impact while ensuring fiscal sustainability.
