Governor calls for fair budget allocations
Kavango West governor Sirkka Ausiku has called on the government to allocate regional budgets based on sound socio-economic research, to ensure a fair distribution of resources, particularly for developmental projects.
According to the 2021 Namibia Multidimensional Poverty Index Report, the region’s multidimensional poverty level stands at 79.6%, one of the highest in the country.
Ausiku highlighted this need while delivering the state of the region address (Sora) on Friday.
“The region continues to request that the allocation of the budgets and resources on developmental aspects of each region must be informed by the available official statistics, and this process will lead to equity and fairness and achieve shared prosperity,” she said.
“This was validated in the multidimensional poverty report, launched in 2021. The report examined poverty indicators/indices across the 14 regions of Namibia and the incidences of multidimensional poverty was the highest in the Kavango West Region at 79.6%.”

“Although the developmental challenges of the region are not insurmountable, the region will continue to highlight them until they are addressed. At the same time, the region appreciates the positive responses from the government in addressing them, though not at a pace the region would like to see,” she said.
She revealed that for the 2022/2023 financial year, the region was allocated N$146 925 000 for the implementation of 40 development projects.
Ausiku also addressed the slow rate of urbanisation in the region.
“The region remains highly rural with only one local authority, Nkurenkuru, and to address this, the Kavango West Regional Council conducted feasibility studies at its identified growth points such as Mpungu, Bunya, Katjinakatji and Ncamagoro and a submission was tabled at the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development for proclamation into settlements by 2023, while Kahenge, Rupara and Katwitwi settlements are to be proclaimed as village councils by 2024.”
