Oshikoto governor Penda ya Ndakolo is calling on micro-business entrepreneurs to submit funding proposals in support of income-generating projects.

This is contained in a letter dated 6 November to the chairperson of the Oshikoto Regional Council, Samuel Shivute.

“This letter serves to inform your good office that the office of the regional governor is calling for income-generating projects within the Oshikoto Region to submit requests for funding for the financial year 2024/2025,” the letter reads.

Ya Ndakolo encouraged small businesses with the potential to help address unemployment and poverty to apply.

“The micro-enterprises with potential to contribute to development, employment creation, income generation and poverty eradication for the people of the Oshikoto Region are therefore encouraged to apply,” he emphasised.

“The purpose of the funding is for the micro entrepreneurs to be assisted with materials and equipment to grow their businesses and to ensure that micro-enterprises are scaled to continue contributing to the economy of the region," he explained.

“I request each constituency community development committee to recommend two projects to the governor’s office. However, the office should also receive all submitted applications.”

Economic backbone

In his 2023/2024 state of the region address (Sora) in August, Ya Nadakolo indicated that micro and small start-up enterprises are globally recognised as the backbone of many economies.

He said government is taking deliberate steps to encourage and assist start-ups to innovate and upscale.

He noted that his office had provided material support valued at N$100 000 to six promising start-up enterprises in the region.

The beneficiary enterprises operate in manufacturing, agriculture, tailoring and clothing production, as well as salon and beauty care.

“The office is looking forward to continuing with this strategic initiative on an annual basis in order to assist start-up businesses that are in line with the regional development priorities, on a competitive basis to ensure local economic development,” he said at the time.

Youth support

He also said the income-generating activities (IGA) programme under the poverty eradication and social welfare ministry has provided materials to five rural projects specialising in tailoring, bricklaying and milling.

“The programme intends to assist youth in business to expand their businesses and generate additional employment opportunities," he said.

The beneficiaries are in the areas of Okankolo, Olukonda, Onyaanya and Omuthiya constituencies.

Furthermore, 23 youth entrepreneurs in various constituencies of the Oshikoto Region were trained on basic business management skills and were provided with the Namibia Youth Credit scheme (loan) as start-up capital.
